DAILY LIFE

TREKKING

Dare to experience Sumidero Canyon as very few people do—walking it from the mountain heights down to the deep waters of the Grijalva River.

On the first day, you begin an 8 km hike accompanied by a local guide. The trail rises and falls through the mountains, revealing breathtaking panoramas. Your destination: a small rural community where our Maya-Be Association supports projects for positive change. Here, a host family welcomes you, opening both their home and their hearts to share everyday life with you.

In the afternoon, a short walk takes you to a viewpoint with stunning views of the canyon—the stone giant you will explore from the water the next day.

The second day begins with a homemade breakfast before setting off on a 10 km descent to the river. The trail winds through forests and narrow paths; a horse accompanies the group to provide support if needed. Then comes the magical moment: boarding a boat and letting yourself be surrounded by the towering walls of Sumidero Canyon, rising up to a kilometer high. Among caves, rock formations, and abundant wildlife—birds, spider monkeys, butterflies, and even crocodiles—you will feel part of a living, sacred landscape.

Back on solid ground, you return to San Cristóbal de Las Casas with a full heart, a grateful body, and memories filled with unforgettable images.
